The war began as an initiative Egyptian exhausted Israeli: the name "War of Attrition" ("Sword to - Astnzaf") was given by the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser.
The war ended in a Strategic draw - Neither side managed to eradicate the forces of the adversary. The war ended in exhaustion of both parties.
For many years the war of attrition did not have formal recognition by Israel, and its fighters were decorated with the letter operational service for their service during the fighting. Only in 2003, after a delay of 32 years this Ribbon was awarded to soldiers who participated in The War of Attrition.
